Description

We are looking for an energetic, experienced professional to lead a team of professional staff, interns and volunteers providing expert and compassionate medical care and rehabilitation to local wildlife. We need a highly organized and emotionally mature individual who believes in our mission, thrives on challenge, and will positively represent the Center and its work. Serving as a critical member of the senior leadership team, the incumbent will share in setting the future direction of the medical program including creation of policies, objectives, practice standards, and adherence to regulatory requirements. The Medical Clinic Director will be a working supervisor, responsible for leading shifts as well as clinic management. Responsibilities include strategic planning, budgeting, staffing, organizing, and managing all resources related to the medical clinic. The position is scheduled for 40 hours per week with a peak busy season ranging from April through October. Peak season may require more than 40 hours per week. November through March is more geared toward planning and administrative activities.

The Wildlife Medical Clinic Director will oversee the daily operations of the Wildlife Medical Clinic including but not limited to overseeing / conducting admissions, assessments, health checks, medical treatment, maintaining medical records, establishing individual dietary plans, creating and modifying clinic protocols, designing and carrying out treatment plans, consulting veterinarians on difficult cases, and working with other staff to ensure each patient receives the necessary individualized care to thrive and be released into the wild. The Medical Clinic Director should be comfortable handling the close to 200 species treated by the center; and be familiar with common ailments and health needs of each of these species, including issues they may face while recovering.

Qualifications

Preferred Skills and Abilities:

  1. A working knowledge and adequate understanding of common wildlife, biology, and medical terminology
  2. Knowledge of the NWRA Minimum Standards and Code of Ethics
  3. A minimum of 2-3 years of management experience
  4. Licensed wildlife rehabilitator (for the State of Maine) or willingness to achieve license within first year of employment.
  5. Knowledge of and compliance with the Animal Welfare Act and Regulations, American Veterinary Medical Association Guidelines on Euthanasia, Endangered Species Act and all applicable Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Rules and protocol
  6. Ability to write, type, organize and present information with an effective command of the English language is required as is a working knowledge of Word and Excel
  7. Experience with databases
  8. Practical experience in wildlife rehabilitation field
  9. Broad knowledge of current mammology, wildlife and ecology conservation issues, especially those that affect New England wildlife.
  10. Knowledge of avian and reptilian biology and behavior
  11. Strong research skills related to medical conditions and treatment planning
  12. Demonstrated capacity to train, mentor, and motivate staff
  13. Ability to evaluate budget performance to achieve financial expectations
  14. Demonstrated ability to interview, select, train, and develop qualified staff
  15. Competence in staff development and performance evaluations
  16. Ability to create and administer clinic policies
  17. Ability to develop and articulate goals designed to promote organizational strategies
  18. Ability to assess the performance of individuals, establish performance standards, implement change, implement accountability and reward achievement
  19. Serve as a role model and mentor

Preferred Training and Experience:
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in Biological Sciences, Zoology, Animal Husbandry, or related curriculum and 6-8 years of progressive experience in orthinology / mammology work in a similar setting or equivalent combination of training, handling and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Alternatively, professional work experience, which clearly demonstrates attainment of required knowledge, skills, and abilities, may substitute for a completed degree.

For twenty-five years, our wildlife medical clinic and rehabilitation facility, its staff and volunteers have provided medical care, safe sanctuary and humane treatment for ill, injured and orphaned wildlife until they can be released back into the wild. The Center for Wildlife is a private, non-profit organization whose mission is to rehabilitate and provide sanctuary for sick and injured wild animals, and to promote respect for wildlife and the environment. Center for Wildlife provides the full range of treatment services needed to rehabilitate birds, mammals and reptiles; assisting the public with issues relating to wildlife; and provides educational and outreach programs to promote knowledge and appreciation of wild animals and the habitats they depend on for survival. Opportunities are also available to be involved in research and grant writing.
